REVIEW: This is one to treasure, it is truly magical Dawn. Bravo. It will stand in pride of place besides my other special books, 'The Little Prince', 'Jonathan Livingston Seagull', 'The Boy, the Mole, 'The Fox and The Horse' amongst others.

The story in verse is so enchanting. It takes you from the semi- feral foal coming off Exmoor, the very abrupt weaning and all the fears and feelings he experiences from his point of view. Through trust and connection with his new guardians, also with freedom, forage and friends in the herd, he grows and grows in confidence. There is a little twist at the end that I wasn't expecting  Throughout the book there is a strong message that kindness and patience and trying to see the world from their point of view is the only way to handle this enigmatic pony breed. They are our teachers and help us to find a better way with all equines.

One of my Christmas presents from hubby, such a lovely surprise to find he had opted for the limited edition to include the beautiful print of the  book cover by Rebecca de Mendonça. Now I just need to find a frame and hang it..."

Rowan The Exmoor Pony

NEW BOOK by Dawn Westcott - available here.
A lovely story and helping to support the Exmoor Pony Project.

'Rowan The Exmoor Pony' by Dawn Westcott - published by Halsgrove Publishing.

Rowan The Exmoor Pony - The Story
Rowan is a moorland Exmoor pony, born wild and free in Exmoor National Park. He enjoys a carefree, idyllic start to life with his herd and forms a special bond with his brother Robin as a foal. The autumn pony gathering arrives with a shock and sets Rowan on a completely new life adventure - meeting new pony friends, learning to trust people, discovering agility, becoming a ridden pony and experiencing all kinds of activities - and a fair bit of mischief too!

But what happened to Rowan's brother Robin - and will we ever find out?

Written in rhyming verse in Rowan’s own words and illustrated in colour throughout,
Rowan The Exmoor Pony will delight children and adults alike.

Dawn Westcott, author of best selling Wild Pony Whispering, says, “At first, I thought I was writing a children’s book, until I saw the response from adult friends and family and realised that this is a story that can appeal to everyone.”

Fellow Exmoor pony owner and broadcaster, Alastair Stewart OBE, says, 'Rowan's story will thrill Exmoor lovers, like me, and harness a whole new audience. The poetic rhythm suits a pony, and the story and language capture the essence of horses and humanity's love and respect for them”.

Dawn says, "I greatly appreciate Alastair’s response to the format - as I started writing the story, it took on a rhythm of its own which evolved into a ballad. At first, I thought I was writing a children’s story, yet the response from adult friends and family made me realise that what Rowan has to say appeals to everyone."

“The sentiment threading through Rowan’s story reflects the importance of listening to and connecting with animals - appreciating that they have thoughts and feelings, too,” said Dawn. “When we treat animals with respect, understanding, empathy and compassion, we become better people ourselves.

“I’ve deliberately not focused on particular human characters in the book. This is a story told from Rowan the pony’s point of view and it’s for anyone - from any age and demographic - to feel they can slip into the role of one of Rowan’s people, and immerse themselves in the experience of building a bond of trust with an Exmoor pony.”

Rowan The Exmoor Pony radiates  positive messages about Exmoor pony qualities and characters, empathetic horsemanship and animal sentience.

The beautiful cover artwork has been created by acclaimed equestrian artist, Rebecca de Mendonca, who has done a fantastic job reflecting the essence of the story.

Rowan The Exmoor Pony is published in A5 quality softcover by Halsgrove Publishing, priced £9.99. ISBN 978-0-85704-357-3.

Rowan The Exmoor Pony - Reader Reviews...

"A book for all ages - perfect for Christmas. I absolutely loved reading 'Rowan the Exmoor Pony'. I am 43 and couldn't put it down! The heart-warming and charming story is told through beautifully written verse and hand-drawn illustrations. It also gives a wonderful insight into the life of endangered Exmoor ponies, through the eyes of one wild foal born on the moor.

I really can't recommend it enough."

Katie Sutton

"What a wonderful book, written entirely in rhyming verse. The author’s love and affection for Exmoor ponies shines through. Her ability to empathise with these beautiful creatures makes Rowan’s narrative so very credible and real. This charming book will help readers, especially the young, remain conscious of the importance of kindness and patience in approaching all ponies, not just Rowan’s clan. Reading this moving book will reinforce our affection for these wild and ancient inhabitants of Exmoor, wherever we meet them."
Peter Rae

'Rowan's story will thrill Exmoor lovers, like me, and harness a whole new audience. The poetic rhythm suits a pony, and the story and language capture the essence of horses and humanity's love and respect for them”.
Alastair Stewart OBE

"Beautiful story, one to treasure, so much more than a book!"
Josephone Laing

“From the first to last lines, it's impossible not to be drawn into Rowan's world and feel connected to his endearing characteristics - curious and eager to learn, while bravely expressing a sense of vulnerability as he adjusts to significant life changes. Rowan The Exmoor Pony is a heart-warming insight into the everyday realities of one of the Westcountry's best loved native breeds ... and a must read for any horse lover.”

Athwenna Irons, Farming and Equestrian Editor, Western Morning News

"An ideal present for children who love a good story. I bought this book to read to my grandchildren. It has not disappointed. The older children loved the storyline and the beautifully written verses. The younger children were enthralled by the pictures. The paper is of very good quality, which is just as well as it is clearly a book that will be read again and again."
Jane Pearn

"I couldn't put it down. What a beautiful book. Dawn Westcott's passion for this ancient breed shines through every page. Each little chapter gives us an insight into the Exmoor pony and how we can learn from them if we take the time to watch and listen. The last chapter actually brought tears to my eyes! Certainly recommended and would make a brilliant present for anyone, of any age, who loves horses."
Annie Keetch

"I was absolutely thrilled yesterday to receive my advanced copy of ‘Rowan the Exmoor Pony’, the new book by Dawn Westcott! It is such a wonderful book! I thought I’d take a peak at it, and then had to sit down and read it right through. It was so engaging, and I have to confess I got rather emotional at the end (no spoilers though). Dawn’s first venture into fiction is aimed at adults and children, and is written as a poem that is SO easy to read. It is full of information about the lives and characters of these incredible ponies, and just delightful. I am honoured that Dawn asked me to illustrate the cover."
Rebecca de Mendonca

"What a sweet beautiful story, I loved it. Dawn you are a star. I love the illustrations."

Nicky Beckett

"When your daughter has not had a great start to the week and you come home from hospital to find this ! Wow such a beautiful book, great for children and adults. And to find one of our Exmoors in your book with my daughter is so special. Thankyou so much Dawn Westcott. Such a beautiful book."
Paris Cataldo

"It's a beautiful little book with stories for the young and information for the older reader...and perfectly tees up for the next exciting episode."
Geoff Baylis

"Once again, Dawn has managed to condense the highly complex subject of moorland-bred Exmoor ponies - their breeding, raising, management and training for various disciplines (or none) - into a deceptively simple format. This book tells the story of two Exmoor colts who have been separated at weaning, but it contains so much more. The book itself is of absolutely beautiful quality - the paper quality, the wonderful illustrations, the poetry (which actually scans, rhymes and makes sense!) and the underlying message it conveys."

Dawn Perkins

"It's a lovely story presented beautifully in verse. I got one for my granddaughter and one for my collection."

Josephine Laing

"This is a brilliant book for adults or children."
Jo Holloway

"Have just read my copy from cover to cover  - a must read for all ages. Wonderful."
